A couple from Hawkesbury, Ontario, JoAnn and Gaetan Champagne hit the bit-time in last weekend’s Lotto Max draw to take the first prize of $50 million; however the Champagne’s are having to wait for payment and, I guess, put celebrations on hold whilst their claim goes through a special “insider” investigation process because the couple have been employed as lottery retailers in the past year.

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) rules require that any prize claims by so-called “insiders” which includes retailers, must be thoroughly reviewed. This means that the payment of prizes is held for 30 days to allow anyone with concerns about the prize to come forward.

According to OLG the Champagnes had owned and operated Jo’s Depanneur in Hawkesbury, midway between Ottawa and Montreal, until October last, when they sold it, however JoAnn Champagne had continued working there until recently, but the winning ticket was purchased at a different store in Hawkesbury called Pharmaprix. Under OLG policy, retailers cannot buy, check or redeem their own tickets at their place of work but are allowed to play at other retail locations, but should they win they have to go through an extra level of scrutiny.
