World Record Mega Millions Jackpot – the Final Chapter
Thursday, April 19th, 2012To use that old hackneyed phrase, “It ain’t over ‘till the fat lady sings.” Well she’s now sung her song and the final chapter in the long running who’s won, who didn’t win, last month’s world record $656 million Mega Millions jackpot has now been written.
There were three winning Mega Millions tickets sold for the March 30, drawing, but it took a week for the first winner – a regular lotto player who decided to remain anonymous – to come forward in Kansas. This led to much speculation and rumour about the identity of the two remaining shareholders until on April 10, a syndicate of three anonymous public school employees from Maryland – known as the “Three Amigos” stepped forward to claim their share of the prize pot which just left one more winner to collect.
Well at a news conference which took place yesterday in Red Bud, a farming community about 40 miles southeast of St. Louis, a retired southern Illinois couple Merle and Patricia Butler laid claim to the third and final share of the record breaking Mega Millions jackpot.
Under lottery rules multi-million dollar winners must appear at a press conference, to “assure other players that prizes are paid to winners”. However in the State of Illinois anonymity is not an option which why the Butlers came forward publicly; the delay gave them time to meet with financial and legal advisers and to allow them to properly prepare for the cameras.
The lucky couple won their share of the booty after buying their ticket at the Moto Mart in Red Bud; additionally Moto Mart’s owner will also receive $500,000 from the lottery as a bonus for selling the winning ticket. So it looks like party time in Red Bud has arrived!
Well there was no jackpot winner in Tuesday’s Mega Millions draw so the jackpot rollover has now risen to a very handy SIXTY FIVE MILLION dollars. Mind you, there was no jackpot winner in yesterday’s Powerball draw either, which means the next Powerball jackpot has climbed to a very, very, very handy indeed ONE HUNDRED and FIFTY TWO MILLION bucks!
