Another 897 players pocketed at least $10,000 each for matching 4 mains and the Mega Ball. The remainder of the available prize pot was shared between 16,351,557 other Mega Millions players with prizes ranging from $2 up to $160.

First of all Danish State lottery operator Danske Spil e-mailed 302 players to tell them they were not just lottery millionaires but some were lottery BILLIONAIRES after “winning”  jackpot prizes in last Tuesday draw ranging from an eye-watering 1 billion Danish Krone (US$178.4 million) to a colossal 280 billion (US$49.7 billion).

Then 90 minutes later the winners got a very apologetic second e-mail from Danske Spil which said they’d screwed up big time and their winning prizes were NOT billions but actually only 200, 300 or 400 Danish Krone – about US$35 to US$70 – hardly life changing, but might just cover the price of a steak meal!

Danske Spil blamed “human error” for the mistake – so I guess there might now be a few job vacancies down at Danish Lottery headquarters! A lottery spokesman said most players had taken the “bad news on the chin,” although a few were “very angry” and were demanding their original “prize.” Danske Spil was now considering whether to offer compensation to the disappointed players!

Whilst I’m on the subject of European lotteries, firstly, there were no jackpot winners in the new Eurojackpot lottery drawn for the first time yesterday, although 2 players did win €42,755 (US$56,740), each by matching the 5 main numbers: secondly, just a reminder that Italy’s SuperEnalotto will be drawn later today – there’s €76,900,000 (US$102 million) in the jackpot – which will very definitely cover the price of a steak meal!
