The chance of winning a life-changing bumper lottery jackpot is the optimistic expectation for cash-strapped families across Britain as sales of National Lottery tickets hit record highs, and follows Camelot’s strategy for responsible growth by encouraging many people to play but to actually spend relatively small amounts.

UK National Lottery operator Camelot revealed yesterday that lottery ticket sales were up a fifth to £3.2 billion (US$5 billion) in the six months to 24 September, marking the group’s best ever interim period and ranking Camelot as the seventh largest lottery in the world in terms of sales

The lottery has created 2,700 millionaires and multi-millionaires to date, including Colin and Chris Weir from Largs in Scotland who won a mind-blowing £161 million (US$254 million) in the EuroMillions lottery in August and promptly entered the record books by becoming Scotland’s biggest ever lottery winners.

Camelot also revealed that the rise in sales had led to increased returns of £918.3 million (US$1.4 billion) to good causes, up from £784.8 million (US$1.2 billion) last year. Since launching the UK National Lottery in 1994 Camelot has paid out £27 billion (US$42.6 billion) for good causes and £40 billion (US$63 billion) in prize money.
